The approach to the museum is signposted on all main roads in the Speyer area.

Nearest car park: Festplatz (sat-nav: Festplatz/Geibstraße). From there, it is just a few minutes’ walk to Domplatz/the museum.

The Festplatz is occasionally used as an event venue; please check the current situation and possible alternative parking options before setting off, for example via the City of Speyer’s website. From 6 July 2026, the Festplatz will be closed due to the Brezelfest. From 8 to 15 July, the Naturfreunde car park will be open only to visitors to the Brezelfest, subject to a charge.

From Speyer Central Station/Bahnhofsvorplatz stop: Take bus 561 to the Domplatz/Speyer stop.

From Mainz: RE4 to Karlsruhe.
From Mannheim: S3 towards Germersheim/Karlsruhe or S4 to Bruchsal.
From Karlsruhe: S3 towards Germersheim/Mannheim or RE4 to Speyer.

Parking: Domplatz, only about 50 metres from the museum.

By public transport

From Speyer Central Station/‘Bahnhofsvorplatz’ stop: take bus 561 to the ‘Domplatz/Speyer’ stop.

Car parks

Große Pfaffengasse (right next to the museum): three parking spaces for people with disabilities.

Alternative: Festplatz/Speyer (200 metres from the museum).

Please note: The Festplatz is a hard-sand surface which is usually easy to navigate, but depending on the weather, it may present difficulties for wheelchairs and pushchairs. In this case, the car parks in Große Pfaffengasse are preferable.

Museum entrance

When standing in front of the museum, the step-free entrance is on the left-hand side of the museum building. Signs indicate the direction. There is a bell at the side entrance; our staff will be happy to open the door for you and accompany you to the museum ticket office and the exhibition rooms.

Exhibition rooms

All exhibition rooms are accessible without steps. The only exceptions are the last two rooms in the left wing of the Wine Museum, which cannot be altered due to their listed status. We thank you for your understanding.

Wheelchairs and folding chairs are available to hire from us.
The toilet for people with disabilities is located on the ground floor near the lockers.

Access to all areas of the museum is permitted with certified assistance dogs, provided they are properly identified. Please bring the relevant identification with you.

Admission

People with disabilities whose disability card bears the ‘B’ or ‘H’ designation may be accompanied by one person free of charge.

Please do not bring any food or drink into the exhibition area. Ask the staff about our picnic area, where you can eat food you have brought with you.

Photography is permitted in our collections for private purposes – without flash or a tripod.

Please note the guidelines for photography in our special exhibitions on the pages for the respective exhibitions under the ‘Special Exhibitions’ menu item. As the objects on display are often subject to special protection, specific guidelines apply to each exhibition. If in doubt, please feel free to speak to the on-site attendants.

Photography for commercial and academic purposes always requires written permission from the Media and Public Relations Department of the Historical Museum of the Palatinate.

Please note that the publication of photographs on the internet and on social media does not, as a rule, constitute private use and may, under certain circumstances, infringe personal rights.

Please follow the signs in the museum to the cloakroom and lockers.

In accordance with the museum rules, please do not take bulky or wet items such as umbrellas, rainwear, rucksacks and carrier bags into the exhibition rooms. These items must be stored in a locker or at the cloakroom (deposit: 1 euro).

Shopping bags larger than A4 size (approx. 21 x 30 cm) must also be stored in a locker. Handbag-sized rucksacks up to A4 size are permitted, provided they are carried over the shoulder.

If in doubt, please ask a member of staff. The Palatinate Historical Museum accepts no liability for items handed in or left in storage.
