"Valentinian I and the Palatinate in Late Antiquity"

The exhibition presented around 65 outstanding find complexes and individual exhibits from late antiquity on 150 square metres. In addition to the bread stamp from Eisenberg - the oldest evidence of early Christianity in the Palatinate and part of the collection of the Historical Museum of the Palatinate - the exhibition featured special exhibits from exquisite lenders such as the portrait bust of Valentinian I from the NY Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen. Numerous other archaeological finds from graves and military and civilian settlements, extensive hoard finds and interactive multimedia elements gave visitors to the exhibition a deeper insight into the upheaval of the 4th and 5th centuries AD.

In April 2019, an outstanding exhibit was added to the exhibition for 10 weeks: a late antique folding chair. The unique, partially gilded and silver foil-covered find was probably used by a lady of the social elite as a piece of travelling furniture and was presented to the public for the first time following its extensive restoration.

A richly illustrated accompanying publication was published on the occasion of the exhibition and the Historical Society of the Palatinate organised a scientific conference.
