"Football Fever: Derbies in the South-West"
Spectacular goals on the pitch, impressive choreographed displays in the stands and matches whose winners will be celebrated for years to come and whose losers will be mourned for a long time: Derbies electrify the football-mad nation, entire cities and regions – particularly in the south-west with its numerous traditional clubs and former Bundesliga sides such as 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Waldhof Mannheim, Karlsruher SC, controversial promoted sides such as TSG Hoffenheim, or the former football giants Wormatia Worms and FK 03 Pirmasens. These are stories of tradition and emotion, told from the kick-off right through to deep into injury time.
Signed shirts of legendary derby heroes, gleaming trophies from the clubs’ treasuries or the hallowed pitch where promotion was secured: every club cherishes its own myths and legends. Here, these stories come to life across some 400 square metres. In terms of content, the exhibition bridges the gap from legendary south-west derbies through club and association history to women’s and amateur football. Individual club profiles put the spotlight on the clubs themselves: well-known giants such as 1. FC Kaiserslautern, SV Waldhof Mannheim 07 and Karlsruher SC are just as much a part of the exhibition as the local clubs and their derbies.
The exhibition “Football Fever: Derbies in the South-West” is based on the exhibition ‘Football Fever: Football History(ies) from Rhineland-Palatinate’, which was organised by the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage of Rhineland-Palatinate in collaboration with 1. FSV Mainz 05, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, the Fritz Walter Foundation, the German Football Museum, Lotto Rhineland-Palatinate GmbH, Südwestrundfunk (SWR), the Rhineland Football Association (FVR), the South-West German Football Association (SWFV) and other partners. We have expanded this to include the history of several clubs on the right bank of the Rhine and placed the focus on derbies in the south-west.
Our tip:
To mark the end of the exhibition, a guided tour with curator Sebastian Zanke will take place on 30 April at 6 pm. Afterwards, over a beer to round off the day, there will be an opportunity to discuss the most significant derby moments and football stories from the south-west and to chat with the curator in person.
The price of €15.90 includes admission to the exhibition, the curator’s guided tour, a bottle of ‘Halbzeit-Helles’ from the BLACK STORK brewery in Speyer, and a pretzel during the drinks reception afterwards.
