About us

We have been one of the most important museums in Germany for many years with our diverse programmes. With our Young Museum (JUMUS), we make it possible for children and young people to access historical topics in an age-appropriate and exciting way. Over the years, the interactive family exhibitions have become a magnet for visitors of all ages.

Many pictures and detailed information on the organs, activities, special and collection exhibitions, events, staff and much more of the Historical Museum of the Palatinate can be found in the annual report.

History

The Historical Museum of the Palatinate preserves several hundred thousand exhibits from early times to the present day. The basis of the collection goes back to the Historical Society of the Palatinate, which was founded in 1827 and collected and preserved evidence of Palatinate history and made it accessible to the public. In 1869, this collection was united with that of the former Palatinate district and the collection of the city of Speyer. The number of exhibits quickly outgrew the existing premises and it was decided to build a new building on Domplatz.

The architect Gabriel von Seidl (1848-1913), who also built the Bavarian National Museum in Munich, was commissioned to construct the museum building. The building was inaugurated in 1910 and an extension was added in 1990. Since then, the museum has presented its collection in a variety of collection and special exhibitions. In the coming years, extensive building work will make the museum fit for the future.

COTTON MILL COLLECTION CENTRE

We cannot exhibit all objects permanently. That is why we keep large parts of the collections in our depot, the "Alte Baumwollspinnerei" collection centre. The restoration workshops, a photo studio and other workstations are also housed here.

The Board of Directors

The Foundation's Board of Directors is made up of the Chairman of the Historical Society of the Palatinate, Mr Thomas Metz; the Deputy Chairman Christoph Kraus, Head of Department in the Ministry for Family Affairs, Women, Culture and Integration, Rhineland-Palatinate; the Deputy Chairman Stefanie Seiler, Mayor of the City of Speyer and the Director Prof. Dr Alexander Schubert, also Managing Director of the Historical Museum of the Palatinate Speyer.
The Executive Board advises the Board of Trustees, deals with the finances and determines the guidelines for the foundation's activities. 14 representatives of the respective founders together form the Board of Trustees.
