Guided Cathedral Tour
Rudolf of Habsburg died in Speyer on July 15, 1291. A relief on the bronze portal of Speyer Cathedral shows him reaching the city, hunched over astride his horse. He had been in Germersheim and rode to Speyer once physicians informed him of his impending death since he desired to be buried in the cathedral. This added a grave of a monarch from the House of Habsburg to the Salians’ burial site, consequently making it a transdynastic imperial burial site.
You will learn everything worth knowing about the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Speyer Cathedral during an approximately one-hour walkthrough. The cathedral’s origins, its historical significance, its art historical highlights and its spiritual dimension are subjects of a guided cathedral tour. Accompanied by a trained cathedral guide, you will get to know the cathedral inside and outside. You will enter the apse, normally closed to visitors, and visit the cathedral’s crypt with the attached imperial and royal vault.
Time: approx. 60 minutes
Price: € 95 to 160 per group including admission to the crypt
Group size: limited to 25 people
Schedule: during the cathedral’s regular hours (Monday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5/6/7 p.m.)
Wheelchair accessible: yes, except for the crypt and transept
Booking: only through the Büro für Domführungen and only online and in German [JK1]– enter the code “Habsburger-Kombi” in “sonstigen Mitteilungen”
