The Golden Hat of Schifferstadt is the most spectacular find in the “Prehistory” collection. The cone made of thin sheet gold is thought to have been a ceremonial hat of a priest with authority far beyond the region.

Roman Era

The penetrating gaze and masterly craftsmanship make the cast bronze head of a centaur a unique find. It dates to the era of Emperor Augustus and was presumably part of a statuette.

The funerary crowns of the Salian emperors, Henry III’s imperial orb and Henry IV’s gold ring are among the unique objects from the imperial and royal tombs in Speyer Cathedral where a total of eight emperors and kings and three empresses were interred.

Early Modern Era

The political events connected with the Hambach Festival are the focal point of the presentation. Some 30,000 people gathered near Neustadt an der Weinstrasse at Pentecost in 1832 to peacefully demand a united democratic Germany.
