Early Modern Era
A stirring and pioneering age marked by upheavals: The “Early Modern Era” collection furnishes an overview of the history of the Palatinate from ca. 1500 to ca. 1930. Not only topics of regional history but also national and European issues repeatedly play a role, too.
The Hambach Festival and the Revolutions of 1848-49
The political events connected with the Hambach Festival are the focal point of the presentation. Some 30,000 people gathered near Neustadt an der Weinstrasse at Pentecost in 1832 to peacefully demand a united democratic Germany. It was the birthplace of the German national colors of black, red and gold. This exhibition boasts numerous, extremely rare original objects, including a print with an authentic depiction of the procession to Hambach Castle, a black, red and gold flag carried in Hambach and a drum from Speyer’s civilian militia.
